Lord Of The Lords: From Cuttack Bench To The CJI’s Chair

The day Justice Dipak Misra was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Orissa High on January 17, 1996, at the age of 43 years, then only it was almost obvious that he might one day become the Chief Justice of India.

And that day has come. Naturally it is time for his friends in legal profession and family members to celebrate the day with distribution of sweets. For members of the Orissa High Court Bar Association and his relatives staying mostly in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar it means a gala moment.

Justice Dipak Misra born on 3rd October, 1953 was enrolled as an advocate in the High Court Bar in his home state Odisha on 14th February, 1977 and practiced in constitutional, civil, criminal, revenue, service and sales tax matters in the Orissa High Court and the State Administrative Tribunal.

Many of his friends and seniors recollect the days when the handsome young man cycled down to the High Court in scorching sun. Then of course he purchased a scooter, a luxury for him. Next time when he visits Odisha and will spend free time in his Samanta Sahi House in Cuttack city, he will come as the CJI of India and lots of regality attached to that prestigious portfolio.

An introvert and a man of few words, Justice Dipak from his initial appointment in the Orissa HC in January, 1996, he was transferred to the Madhya Pradesh HC and made a permanent judge on December 19, 1997.

His first upward mobility in the ladder came in December 2009 when he was elevated to the post of Chief Justice of the Patna HC. In May 2010 he moved to the Delhi HC as its Chief Justice.

Justice Deepak Misra served in that capacity until his elevation to the Apex Court of India on October 10, 2011. He has thus far served in the Supreme Court for almost seven years and until his retirement on October 2, 2018 will have a tenure of about 14 months as the CJI.
